September 21st- Are the Kids Alright? Promoting BIPOC Student Wellness at Your School with Dr. Holly Hinderlie

Last year many independent schools raised the bar on their DEIJ initiatives in response to the protests of George Floyd's killing and the social media posts by BIPOC students voicing their experiences of racism and marginalization with our schools. These posts provided a window into the painful experiences that BIPOC students have in our schools and indicated where reconciliation, listening and substantial change are needed.

As we embark on the 2021 - '22 school year, with a continuing pandemic as a backdrop, it is now more important than ever to ask the question "Are the kids alright?".  It is essential to ensure that a school's DEI efforts are making a difference in the lived experiences of the BIPOC students on its campus. This workshop will present a six-pronged approach to sustained and strategic efforts that schools can implement to support the wellness, mental health, social-emotional adjustment, and academic and job success of BIPOC students.

AISGW is pleased to offer this fall subscription series, “Building Belonging,” to support our member schools’ diversity, equity and inclusion work. The goal of this series is to provide deeper learning opportunities for educators who are working to create more inclusive school communities. We hope that these offerings can meet much of a school’s professional development needs in the area of DEI.

What does the subscription include and how much does it cost?

The series includes seven workshops covering a range of DEI topics (see below). By registering for the series, a school can send an unlimited number of participants -- from administrators to trustees to classroom teachers -- to each of the listed sessions for one flat fee. The subscription fee is $675 per school. Please note that due to the nature of the topic, the sessions will not be recorded.

How do I register my school for the series?

As part of registration, participant schools will appoint a contact person who will coordinate internally with members of your school community who plan to attend the series. The contact person could be the DEI director, heads' assistant, professional development leader, assistant head -- whoever makes sense for your school! The contact person will receive the Zoom link before each session and distribute the link as well as any related program materials to your school's attendees.

What are the session topics and when will the sessions be offered?

Sessions will be offered twice monthly at 4:00 pm for either 60 or 90 minutes from late September to December. All sessions will take place virtually. The sessions are intended for heads of school, trustees, division leaders, DEI practitioners, counselors, and in some cases, teacher-leaders. Schools may determine who they would like to attend each session and there will be no limit on the number of attendees per school.
